1052 Week 1

WHY SHOULD WE CARE

WHAT WE DO WITH LITERATURE

1. Take a literary work on its own terms.

2. Assume there is a reason for everything.

3. Remember that literary text exit in time, and times change.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHURCHES, CHAPELS, AND CATHEDRALS

church:

a building that Christians go to in order to worship

Traditional churches usually contain an altar and long wooden seats facing the altar called pews. The place where the priest or minister stands to talk to the people is called a pulpit. A religious ceremony that takes place in a church is called a service

chapel:

a small church, or a special room used as a church, where Christians can pray or worship

often considered an extension of a primary religious institution

cathedral:

the most important church in an area that a bishop controls

The word comes from the Greek "kathedra," meaning "chair," as the Bishop's throne is located there
